PCOS and Poor Sperm Quality: Achieving a Positive Pregnancy Through Insemination
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder caused by excess androgen levels. This condition commonly affects women of reproductive age. PCOS is characterized by menstrual irregularities, where women may experience irregular cycles or even the absence of menstruation for a certain period.
This was the condition experienced by Bunda Anggie, who needed a longer time to conceive. She and her husband, Ayah Thoriq, spent six years trying to have a child.
Not only Bunda Anggie faced medical challenges, but Ayah Thoriq was also diagnosed with poor sperm quality and inflammation of the testes.
If left untreated, these conditions can hinder the fertilization process of the egg by sperm. Therefore, timely medical intervention is essential.
Performing Umrah Before Starting a Fertility Program
In their fifth year of marriage, the couple decided to perform Umrah before beginning their fertility program. This step helped them strengthen their emotional readiness and acceptance, regardless of the outcome.
Mulai Journey of Hope
Eventually, in 2023, they decided to begin their fertility journey at Bocah Indonesia. They consulted with dr. Cynthia Agnes Susanto, BMedSc, Sp.OG, an obstetrician-gynecologist who supported Bunda Anggie, and dr. Tiara Kirana, Sp.And, an andrology specialist who assisted Ayah Thoriq.
Choosing Insemination as Their Fertility Program
After undergoing a natural conception program for three months, Bunda Anggie and Ayah Thoriq decided to proceed with intrauterine insemination (IUI).
Based on medical advice, they were encouraged to adopt a healthier lifestyle, including improving their diet, exercising regularly, and undergoing acupuncture therapy to increase their chances of conception.
Acupuncture plays a role in fertility treatment by helping to regulate hormonal balance, reduce stress, and improve the success rates of assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
A study published in the journal Trials reported that acupuncture may improve pregnancy rates and ovulation in women with PCOS.
Acupuncture is not only beneficial for women but also for men. It is believed to improve sperm count and motility, thereby increasing the likelihood of fertilization.
With strong commitment and discipline, the couple began to see progress. Their body weight improved, and their overall health condition became better. Through their perseverance and shared efforts, they finally heard the first heartbeat of the long-awaited baby.
Two weeks after the insemination procedure, the pregnancy test showed two clear lines, confirming a new life growing in Bunda Anggie’s womb.
Today, their small family is complete with the presence of the child they had long dreamed of. Through prayers, dedication, and continuous effort, their long-awaited baby has finally been born into the world.
