Diagnosed with Teratozoospermia, A 4-Year Wait Ends in Joy Through Intrauterine Insemination

The 3.5-year journey of Bunda Dilla Febrinda and Ayah Nugraha Arief finally bore fruit through an intrauterine insemination (IUI) program.
For married couples, the presence of a child is often seen as a precious blessing to complete their small family. However, not every couple is granted the ease of conceiving naturally—especially when faced with fertility challenges.
This was the case for Bunda Dilla and Ayah Nugraha Arief, affectionately known as Ayah Nugi. Married since 2021, the couple was blessed with twins in February 2025 after a long-awaited journey.
The main challenge they faced was teratozoospermia, a condition affecting Ayah Nugi’s sperm morphology, making it difficult for the couple to conceive naturally.
What is Teratozoospermia?
Teratozoospermia is a sperm abnormality in which a man has a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm. This includes irregularities in the head (too big, too small, misshapen), neck (asymmetrical or thin), and tail (short, coiled, or curved). These abnormalities hinder the sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg effectively.

Because fertilization ideally requires sperm with a standard oval-shaped head, a strong neck, and a long tail, this condition often requires medical intervention to achieve pregnancy.
Starting the IUI Journey at Bocah Indonesia
In 2023, Bunda Dilla and Ayah Nugi decided to undergo an intrauterine insemination (IUI) program at Bocah Indonesia. With strong determination and a shared goal of becoming parents, they began their fertility journey under the care of:
dr. Andriana Kumala Dewi, Sp.OG, Subsp.FER – handling Bunda Dilla
dr. Gito Restiansyah Wasian, Sp.And – supporting Ayah Nugi
Unfortunately, their first IUI cycle did not result in a pregnancy. But instead of giving up, they chose to continue their efforts and try a second cycle—and that’s when the miracle happened.
They received a positive pregnancy result, and even more exciting, they were expecting twins.
A Twin Blessing After Consistent Effort
Dr. Andriana explained that IUI success rates vary depending on each patient’s individual condition.
“There is no fertility program that guarantees 100% success. Of course, we all wish a single insemination would work, but several factors influence the outcome,” she shared during Bocah Indonesia’s 6th anniversary event (June 8).
Lifestyle Changes Made a Difference
Bunda Dilla also shared that she and her husband made significant lifestyle changes. She started morning walks regularly, something she rarely did before. This healthier lifestyle was a conscious choice to increase their chances of conceiving.
They also offered a heartfelt message to fellow fertility warriors:
“To couples still waiting for their little miracle—be patient. Everything has its time. Enjoy your moments together as a couple and stay united throughout the journey so that your efforts bring the best results,” shared Ayah Nugi.
After all their perseverance and emotional highs and lows, this resilient couple welcomed their beautiful boy-girl twins in February 2025.
