Are There Any Limits to How Many Times IVF Can Be Done?

Is there a limit to how many times IVF can be performed

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the assisted reproductive technologies with a rather complex procedure. Until now, there is no limit to how many times IVF can be done for parents.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the options for couples who have fertility problems or infertility. Not all couples need to undergo IVF; only married couples with certain indications, as outlined by Dr. Beeleonie, BMedSc, Sp.OG, Subsp. FER, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and fertility consultant at Bocah Indonesia, have to undergo IVF programs, namely:

  • Both mother’s fallopian tubes are blocked

  • A mother who has undergone sterilization

  • Egg cells with very limited quantity, leading to potential decreased quality

  • Low sperm count in the father or even complete absence of sperm

  • A father who has undergone sterilization or vasectomy

IVF Can Be Done More Than Once

Until now, there is no exact rule regarding how many times in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be done because the next IVF cycle can depend on the reasons for previous failures. One individual who underwent IVF more than once is the late singer Coco Lee. Coco Lee and her husband, Canadian Bruce Rockowitz, were married for 12 years but had not yet had children. This couple underwent IVF a total of 9 times.

However, what parents need to consider is the mother’s age when undergoing IVF. The younger the mother, the higher the chance of IVF success because younger mothers tend to have better egg cell quality. Conversely, as the mother’s age increases, the quality of her egg cells tends to decline.

What Needs to Be Prepared If You Want to Start IVF Again?

According to Dr. Maitra Djiang Wen, Sp.And, Subs. FER, MClinEmbryol (Aus), a specialist in andrology, fertility consultant, and head of the embryology laboratory team at Bocah Indonesia, there are some data that parents who have previously failed in IVF and want to start again need to prepare.

“If parents have experienced previous failures, it is important for them to prepare various data, starting with the parents’ medical examination data, as well as data from the previous IVF cycle, including stimulation data, hormonal data, and embryonic development data from the previous embryology lab,” said Dr. Maitra.

That’s the information about how many times IVF can be done, parents. Don’t worry, if you have the indications mentioned above, consult with a doctor before starting the IVF program.
