Medical Conditions Faced
The journey to parenthood for Dennis Lim and Yunda Faisyah was far from easy. According to Dr. Beeleonie, BMedSc, Sp.OG, Subsp. FER, an obstetrics and fertility specialist from Bocah Indonesia, Yunda faced several infertility issues, including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), uterine wall thickening, and blocked fallopian tubes.
“When Yunda first came to us, she had Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), causing irregular menstrual cycles. This meant she didn’t have a fertile period every month. Furthermore, the infrequent menstruation led to a significantly thick uterine wall. She also had blocked fallopian tubes, preventing the meeting of the sperm and egg,” explained Dr. Beeleonie.
It wasn’t just the wife who faced challenges; Dennis Lim also had his share of reproductive issues. Dr. Gito Restiansyah Wasian, Sp.And, an andrology specialist at Bocah Indonesia, revealed that Dennis suffered from teratozoospermia, a condition in which sperm have abnormal shapes and sizes.
“We examine three aspects of sperm: the quantity, movement, and shape. In this case (Dennis), the movement was not optimal,” said Dr. Gito.

He further emphasized that sperm shape is crucial for successful fertilization. If the shape is abnormal, special interventions are needed.
“Good sperm shape is essential to meet and fertilize the egg,” he added.
After identifying the issues with both partners, proper treatments were initiated.
The Struggles of Fertility Treatments
The journey to parenthood was filled with ups and downs. The couple had previously tried multiple fertility programs. Yunda shared that she once experienced a “false pregnancy,” which was caused by a urinary tract infection (UTI) that elevated her hCG levels, a hormone usually associated with pregnancy.
“By the third year, people started asking why we hadn’t conceived yet. That’s when we got busy with fertility programs. During that time, I was declared falsely pregnant because my hCG levels were elevated due to the UTI. So, we continued with various programs here and there. By the fourth year, we decided to take a break and just enjoy our time together. Then, we finally joined Bocah Indonesia,” said Yunda.
The couple also tried intrauterine insemination (IUI) at another clinic, but it was unsuccessful because Yunda experienced bleeding during the procedure.
“We started with natural methods like dietary changes and taking Cyclo-Progynova to regulate my cycle. We also consumed young dates, zuriat fruits, and even underwent traditional massage therapy. Eventually, we tried IUI, but on the procedure day, I started bleeding,” said Dennis.
“We waited for 4–5 hours, but eventually, I experienced contractions and heavy bleeding. At that point, I became pessimistic because bleeding wasn’t supposed to happen,” added Yunda.
Embarking on the IVF Journey
After exhausting other options, the couple, who married through the ta’aruf process, decided to pursue In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). As part of the program, Yunda underwent Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). This advanced technology ensures the selection of the best embryos for implantation, increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy and ensuring the baby’s health. The IVF journey culminated in the joyous news of their twin pregnancy.
Dennis, a preacher, also emphasized that IVF is permissible for legally married couples according to religious and legal principles.
“It’s permissible as long as it’s between the husband and wife. Surrogacy or sperm donation, however, is not allowed. So, it must be between a legally married couple, making IVF a halal option for those considering it,” explained Dennis.
